Why I Create: The Values Behind Sarah Jane Art

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had an innate need to create and to be surrounded by art. Creativity isn’t simply something I do, it’s something I am. It feels like an itch that needs to be scratched; the longer I ignore it, the more restless and unhappy I become.

I am endlessly drawn to lettering and calligraphy for the emotion that beautiful words carry. Handwritten script tells a story - it holds memory, depth, and personality. Through it, I can express feelings that words alone sometimes can’t convey. I want to play a small part in keeping the beauty, soul, and intentionality of handwriting alive, especially in a world captivated by technology, where we risk losing touch with our most human qualities.

Watercolour also captured my heart - fluid, translucent, delicate, and delightfully unpredictable. Its colours shift and bloom in ways that can’t be fully controlled, and that’s part of the magic. It’s a challenging medium, but when it flows as you hope, it’s incomparable to any other.

I’m endlessly inspired by the sensory nature of art, the textures of handmade paper, the raw edges, the way water and pigment move together across a page. There’s something grounding about these tactile moments; they remind me of what it means to be human, to feel, to connect.

These are the values that guide everything I create through Sarah Jane Art — authenticity, mindfulness, connection, and respect for the natural world. Each piece is made with intention, celebrating beauty that’s honest, imperfect, and deeply human. I believe art has the power to remind us of what truly matters: slowing down, noticing the small things, and connecting to ourselves, to each other, and to nature.

Through my work, I want to celebrate the beauty of the world around us - the fleeting, the seasonal, the imperfect. And to honour the small things that so often go unnoticed. Because, in the end, it’s those small details and quiet moments that hold the most meaning.
