Welcome to Sarah Jane Art!

I am a Bath based artist and calligrapher with a passion for capturing the beauty of the world around us. Art in the widest sense has been a love and obsession of mine for as long as I can remember. Whether it's the act of creating art of my own, or admiring that of others, the visual image is something I cannot imagine my life without. There is something incredibly special about putting pen to paper and losing yourself in the creative process.

"The world is but a canvas to our imagination"

Henry David Thoreau

My work is inspired predominately by flowers and architectural subjects. I am fascinated by the interaction between nature and the built environment and how the two often merge into one. Over the last few years I have fallen head over heels in love with flowers and botanical artwork. The detail, colour and beauty in plants is captivating and through my work I hope I can share with others a fascination and p

I took up calligraphy in 2019 and whilst this represents a separate art form to my paintings, its history is interwoven with the emergence of the depiction of botanical subjects. I predominately practice the copperplate style of calligraphy. A traditional, elegant and beautiful form of writing that requires patience, time and dedication.

Fundamentally, my work is rooted in an appreciation for traditional approaches to documenting the beauty of the world around us, be it through a paintbrush or nib.

When I'm not in my art studio, I currently work as an Urban Designer/Masterplanner, designing new places for people to live or helping to breathe life back into existing urban environments. Outside of this, I can usually be found practicing yoga, jogging or walking. I love to read and learn, and to explore our beautiful planet with my husband (Instagram handle @marvsw0rld). Some of my favourite places to visit are the Lake District (no.1 choice every time), the north Devon coastline, Slovenia, Sardinia, and when time allows, south Asia. I have an ever growing list of places to visit.

I love to surround myself with colour. Colours give me energy, soothe my mind, pick me up when I’m feeling low, and always make me smile. My favourite colours are the warm and cosy yellows, oranges, pinks and purples of a sunset and sunrise, and mesmorising blues, turquoises and teals.

I took up painting in 2016 and calligraphy in 2019, both as a way to switch off from a busy day job and to satisfy a creative itch. I am self-taught through trial, error and passionate determination.  Overtime I have grown in confidence and skill, although I still consider myself to have a long way to go on my artist journey.

Art Circle

The Art Circle provides an informal and relaxed environment for local artists in the city of Bath to connect and share knowledge and experiences.

Numerous artists in Bath work in isolation and often with limited interaction with other art practitioners. In response, the Art Circle was established to create opportunities for expanding their network, sharing their work, asking questions and getting to know more about the local art scene.

The sessions of the Art Circle are:

  • Free to attend. No subscriptions or joining fees.

  • No booking required. No need for long term commitments.

  • Held in a central location (in Bath).

  • After office/retail hours (for those working contract hours).

  • Sharing the latest and upcoming art events in Bath.

For more information including dates and venue for upcoming sessions, please complete the form here
